Reading and Play with the LEGO Group

Representation:

Working with Denver Public Schools, we tested and selected a cohort of resistant readers to help us design experiences that incorporate play and reading simultaneously. We then recruited families who visited the LEGO stores across Colorado.

Methodology:

We gave children a book and toy and had them read and play without us in the room with no instructions. We discovered most children do not storytell with their toys without the prompting of an adult. How can we help students develop their storytelling play skills?

Our emotion sensors showed our interactions with a family member help children engage in story-making.

Iteration:

We made over 30 different versions of Reading Play books. Students wouldn’t even open our first books. You can read all the different versions here: LEGO Prototype Stories.

Outcome:

The LEGO Group created a new line of books to help enhance the LEGO play experience: LEGO Play Stories. You can read our published article on the topic here: Learning Through Play
